US theaters will sell $3 tickets for the National Movie Day event

As the excitement of the summer movie season comes to an end, American theaters are looking to reignite interest in movies with National Movie Day, a one-day event that will see participating venues sell movie tickets for prices as low as three dollars.

The Motion Picture Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, announced the event on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. National Movie Day will take place this Saturday, September 3 in more than 3,000 theaters across the United States, including approximately 30,000 participating screens. For reference, there are approximately 40,700 cinema screens in the country.

“After the record-breaking return to cinemas this summer, we wanted to do something to celebrate cinema,” Cinema Foundation President Jackie Brenneman said in a statement. “We do this by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers who made this summer possible and by offering an extra incentive to those who have yet to return.”

National Movie Day comes just as the summer box office momentum has almost completely dissipated. This weekend, theatrical releases grossed a collective $52.7 million – the highest-grossing weekend since February – with new releases “The Invitation”, “Three Thousand Years of Longing” and “Breaking” , all posting rather meager opening numbers.

Theaters are hoping National Movie Day can rejuvenate cinema during a fallow period, while building buzz for the fall season’s slate of releases. Organizers also reportedly described the initiative as a trial run for what could become an annual event. National Movie Day marks the first discount movie business of this magnitude in the modern era, incorporating competing movie chains and independent locations.

The event also aligns with the Labor Day weekend release of “Spider-Man: No Way Home, The More Fun Stuff Version,” an expanded edition of last holiday season’s Marvel mega-hit. , which earned $804 million at the domestic box office.

UK cinemas have also held their own National Cinema Day event, which will also take place on September 3.

Interested consumers can check which locations near them are participating in the event official site.
