ShenDig BBQ Event Attracts More Teams | New

(Shenandoah) – More than two dozen teams are expected in Shenandoah next weekend for the city’s inaugural barbecue.

Shenandoah’s first-ever ShenDig BBQ Competition will be held next Friday and Saturday at the Elks Lodge. Mace Hensen is Co-Chair of the Forum’s ShenDig Committee to Revitalize Shenandoah. Speaking on KMA’s “Morning Line” program on Friday morning, Hensen said 23 teams signed up Thursday and at least two more have expressed interest in taking part in the competition. He adds that the Kansas City Barbecue Society — the event’s sanctioning organization — is keeping registration open until activities begin.

“To meet the minimum for a sanctioned event – ​​which means our grand champion will be in big, big, huge events – we need to have a minimum of 15 teams,” Hensen said. “A lot of the inaugural events, and some of the veteran events that have gone on, have struggled this year with fuel prices, and this and that, and everything that’s going on. It’s so amazing that we’ve had so much a lot of teams.”

Hensen says the land is staked out at the back of the Elks Lodge not only for competitors, but also for the wide array of food trucks and other attractions lined up for the event.

“If you know Friday after 5 events that First National Bank put on,” he said, “they built the stage behind the Elks Lodge. So we’re taking all of what I call ‘the 40 acres of paradise’ “for our BBQ lots. So we’re going to line up all of these 25 teams around the big lot parameter, and then we bring in the ax throwers, we bring in the hot corn. We have a wide variety of food trucks that will be available.”

The teams should arrive on Friday morning. Friday’s ShenDig schedule includes food trucks open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., music from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and a contestant presentation at 6 p.m. Activities kick into high gear on Saturday, with the pitch opening at noon. Although food trucks are available from noon to 7 p.m. and other musical performances begin at 2 p.m., Hensen says early arrivals will have a chance to sample food prepared by contestants around 1 p.m.

“The first 400 people through the gate will receive a red or orange ticket,” Hensen said. “This ticket will get you one of the sample plates from our catering tents. Once those 400 people are gone, then, like I said, we have all that great food from our food vendors that arrived.”

Winners will be announced at 3 p.m., with trophies awarded in three categories: Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and Mayor’s Trophy. A wide assortment of gift packages are also up for grabs. A full schedule of events and Mace Hensen’s full interview are posted here:
