Liberty National celebrity golf event to feature Phelps and Strahan

A unique celebrity golf competition will take place at Liberty National Golf Club this summer.

The Post has learned that, from June 30 to July 1, the Icons series will hold its first US event featuring sports celebrities from around the world at the Jersey City Golf Club which has hosted PGA Tour events and a Presidents Cup. .

The competition will pit a team from the United States against the team from the rest of the world. The American captain is Fred Couples and the international captain is Ernie Els.

The Team USA roster includes Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympic swimmer of all time with 28 medals (23 gold), NFL Hall of Famer and former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan, boxing star Oscar De La Hoya, who has held 11 world titles; and Ben Roethlisberger, former Steelers quarterback and two-time Super Bowl winner.

The Rest of the World team includes Canelo Alvarez, the pound-for-pound king of boxing who has won world titles in four different weight classes, Ash Barty, the recently retired former world No. 1 tennis player who is three times Grand Slam winner, international football manager Pep Guardiola, winner of two Champions League titles and multiple Spanish and English league crowns, and Harry Kane, England national team captain and three-time winner of the Golden Boot.

The event, a 10-hole tag team format, will be broadcast live on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service. Tickets are available through icons-series.com starting at $70,

Team USA and Team Rest of the World will announce additional competitors for the event lineup in the coming weeks.
