On Saturday May 28, 2022, TRUELOVE hosted a celebration at the scenic The Venue, Green Park in Sandton to honor Somizi Mhlongo, Bahumi Mhlongo and Palesa Madisakwane who grace the cover of its June/July 2022 issue.

The people closest to the unconventional modern family were present, including Gogo Maweni, Simphiwe Majola, Sibu Mabena and Nomsa Madida.

“There was a lot of work and a lot of love, and I tried something very different. I wanted to capture this moment and I wanted something very futuristic. I want my daughter to identify with this blanket in the next 15 years. We’ve never done anything like this at TRUELOVE before and if there was another publisher revealing this cover in 2040, it would still be relevant,” said TRUELOVE’s editor, Makhosazana Zwane-Siguqa on the cover.

“It’s beautiful because we have a family you’ve never seen before. When you google families, you’ll never see the features we’ve posted here. This is the face of what it’s like a modern family. Second, where have you ever seen a black man proudly wearing the isphandla sakhe on the cover of a magazine? They don’t allow us to have that, they still want us to hide who we are and that we hide ourselves, our hearts and our spirituality because it’s threatening or misunderstood. I said that Somizi was going to show it proudly because it’s part of who he is. Third, here is a man who stands alongside the mother of his child even though they are not married,” she added.

In her acceptance speech, Somizi said the blanket is a gift to her daughter, Bahumi.

“It’s something she will cherish forever even after we’re gone,” he said.

Bahumi said the cover looked like “true love”.

“I never had a family portrait and I always saw photos of people with their families. These images would have a perfect mother and father and it would be a representation of what love is. But for me, that’s love: staying together, being there for each other even if we’re not together in a conventional way. To me, that’s true love and this is the perfect photo to show it,” she said.

“For me, this image represents future generations to come. More than anything, I would like to thank Buyani Mhlongo for giving me such a beautiful, beautiful daughter. Bahumi, you have to thank me for your look girl because you look nothing like Mhlongos,” Palesa joked.
