Annual Berks Blacksmiths Association Event Upcoming

The Association of Blacksmith Artists of Pennsylvania will hold its annual Blacksmith Day on August 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Old Dry Road Farm Grounds, 202 Highland Road, Lower Heidelberg Township.

All are welcome to the free event which will take place rain or shine.

The events featured are blacksmithing demonstrations, a hands-on instruction area for the public, activities for children and a blacksmithing contest among blacksmiths, organizers said.

Members of the association will discuss the blacksmith trade. Handcrafted metalwork by club members will be on display and for sale. The event and grounds allow pets.

Veterans make a difference

Veterans Making a Difference is involved in these events:

• August 20, 10 a.m.: Conrad Weiser Field of Dreams baseball game in support of Veterans Making A Difference and fundraiser for Kristin Spayd.

The fundraiser takes place at the Robesonia Baseball Field, 102 W. Ruth Ave. The fundraiser includes raffle baskets, hot dogs, drinks, baked goods and a 50/50 drawing. For more information, contact Kerry Schneck at 484-818-0439 or Liz Graybill at 484-577-6898.

• August 27, noon: Flag removal ceremony at the Zion Spies Evangelical Reformed Church, 318, chemin de l’église Spies, canton of Alsace. Veterans Making A Difference will briefly explain the ceremony and then proceed with the appropriate flag removal. Flags will be provided, but any flags requiring disposal will be accepted.

Bereavement support

The sudSSpirit Bereavement Support Group will meet on July 26 at 6 p.m. at the Exeter Community Library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township, for anyone who has experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a spouse or close.

Fundraising Results

The Hack Away at Hunger golf tournament held July 15 at the Reading Country Club in Exeter Township raised $19,000 for local pantries, organizers said.

This tournament started in 2011 as a senior project for Ethan Galtere while he was attending Exeter
High school. He saw the need to help Exeter Area Food Pantry with his resources, organizers said.

Animal shelter open house

Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue will hold its monthly Meet & Greet the Goldens on August 13 from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility at 60 Vera Cruz Road near Reinholds.

Meet Golden Retrievers and other dogs that are available for adoption, and you can ask questions of staff members.

Building a better Boyertown

Building a Better Boyertown celebrates its 20th anniversary September 2 at 6 p.m. at Brakeman’s Cafe, 56 S. Washington St.

The event will be a Roaring Twenties-themed celebration dinner with seasonal hors d’oeuvres, plated salad and plated dinner.
